AI Chatbot Market Share (November 2026): Sourced Rankings, Trends, and Methods
ChatGPT still leads most public measures of AI chatbot usage in late 2026, but the gap depends entirely on what you count. On StatCounter’s worldwide AI chatbot tracker for October 2026, ChatGPT held 51.58% of tracked pageviews among listed chatbots, with Google Gemini at 28.86% and Perplexity at 15.04%. On Similarweb’s gen-AI website traffic series for September 2026, ChatGPT held 56.4% of visits to major assistant sites, Gemini 25.0%, and Claude 9.6%.
Those two datasets answer different questions. StatCounter estimates share of pageviews among sites it classifies as AI chatbots. Similarweb estimates share of visits to a set of gen-AI websites and excludes apps and APIs. Company announcements still use other units: weekly active users, monthly active users, or paid seats. Each figure below stays next to its source, date, and definition. We do not blend them into one “true” share.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT leads on both StatCounter’s worldwide October 2026 pageview table (51.58%) and Similarweb’s September 2026 gen-AI website visit share (56.4%).
- In the U.S., ChatGPT and Gemini are nearly tied on StatCounter’s October pageview measure: 37.10% vs 35.42%.
- Claude looks very different by source: about 2.30% on StatCounter worldwide pageviews, and 9.6% on Similarweb web visits.
- Perplexity is the reverse: 15.04% on StatCounter worldwide, 0.9% in Similarweb’s seven-assistant web set.
- StatCounter’s October 2026 data has a clear break versus earlier months (ChatGPT worldwide near ~80% in prior months, about 51.6% on the October live page). We treat that as a methodology or data discontinuity, not as a settled collapse in usage. Month-over-month comparisons in this report use Similarweb for that reason.
- Similarweb’s October 2026 data wasn’t available at publication; we’ll add it in next month’s update.
- Absolute company figures (Gemini app MAU, ChatGPT WAU, Copilot paid seats) are scale signals, not market share.
Worldwide share (StatCounter pageviews)
Source: StatCounter Global Stats — AI Chatbot Market Share Worldwide, October 2026 table, checked November 5, 2026.
| Rank | Chatbot | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ChatGPT | 51.58% |
| 2 | Google Gemini | 28.86% |
| 3 | Perplexity | 15.04% |
| 4 | Claude | 2.30% |
| 5 | Microsoft Copilot | 2.18% |
| 6 | DeepSeek | 0.05% |

StatCounter’s public list for this metric does not break out Grok or Meta AI. Treat the table as share among the chatbots StatCounter reports, not as a complete census of every assistant.
Important: StatCounter’s October 2026 data break
StatCounter’s earlier monthly data put ChatGPT’s worldwide share near ~80% through September 2026. The October 2026 live page shows about 51.58% (the downloadable CSV for October is about 51.03%). The U.S. series shows a similar break.
That jump is too large to read as a normal month of usage change without an explanation from StatCounter. Until they document the change, we treat October as a methodology or data discontinuity:
- We still cite the live October page tables for “current share.”
- We do not use April–September StatCounter rows as a continuous month-over-month series in this report.
- For month-over-month movement, we use Similarweb’s gen-AI website traffic shares instead (see below).
United States share (StatCounter pageviews)
Source: StatCounter — United States, October 2026 table, checked November 5, 2026.
| Rank | Chatbot | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ChatGPT | 37.10% |
| 2 | Google Gemini | 35.42% |
| 3 | Microsoft Copilot | 11.23% |
| 4 | Perplexity | 10.34% |
| 5 | Claude | 5.70% |
| 6 | DeepSeek | 0.21% |

In the U.S., ChatGPT and Gemini are nearly tied on this pageview measure. Copilot’s U.S. share is much higher than its worldwide StatCounter reading, which fits a Microsoft-heavy desktop and workplace mix in that sample. The same October discontinuity noted above applies to the U.S. series.
Month-over-month: gen-AI website traffic (Similarweb)
For a consistent month-over-month series, we use Similarweb’s gen-AI website traffic shares (global, all devices, website visits only). The latest month published in Similarweb’s public updates as of November 5, 2026 is September 2026. Similarweb’s October data wasn’t available at publication; we’ll add it in next month’s update.
Sources: Similarweb LinkedIn update (September 2026); cross-checked with Plate Lunch Collective’s October 2026 compilation (labels Similarweb as measured).
Latest month (September 2026)
| Chatbot | Share of gen-AI website visits |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 56.4% |
| Gemini | 25.0% |
| Claude | 9.6% |
| DeepSeek | 3.4% |
| Grok | 2.3% |
| Copilot | 1.5% |
| Perplexity | 0.9% |
August → September 2026 change (percentage points)
| Chatbot | Aug 2026 | Sep 2026 | MoM |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 55.6% | 56.4% | +0.8 pp |
| Gemini | 25.6% | 25.0% | −0.6 pp |
| Claude | 9.3% | 9.6% | +0.3 pp |
| DeepSeek | 3.5% | 3.4% | −0.1 pp |
| Grok | 2.5% | 2.3% | −0.2 pp |
| Copilot | 1.6% | 1.5% | −0.1 pp |
| Perplexity | 0.9% | 0.9% | 0.0 pp |

Reading the trend: From October 2025 to September 2026 in the Similarweb snapshots, ChatGPT’s web-visit share fell from 71.8% to 56.4%, while Gemini rose from 13.6% to 25.0% and Claude from 2.3% to 9.6%. ChatGPT’s share bottomed mid-2026 and rose again in August and September. Gemini has eased from its mid-year peak in this web-only series.
Limitation: Similarweb excludes native apps and API usage. Assistants that are strong inside mobile apps or workplace suites can look smaller here than they are in total usage.
Company-reported scale (not market share)
These are absolute counts from the companies (or direct quotes of them). They are not convertible into the StatCounter or Similarweb percentages above without inventing a denominator, so we keep them separate.
| Product | Figure | Period | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini app | More than 1 billion monthly active users | Announced Aug 11, 2026 | Google The Keyword |
| ChatGPT | 1.2 billion weekly active users | Reported Sep 29, 2026 (up from 1B WAU in July) | The Verge citing OpenAI |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | Surpassed 30 million paid seats | Earnings context published Jul 30, 2026 | Microsoft Copilot Blog (Jared Spataro) |
Anthropic, Perplexity, xAI, and Meta had not published a comparable standalone consumer MAU or WAU figure we could verify for this update’s cutoff. Meta AI usage is often reported inside Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp metrics rather than as a standalone chatbot MAU.
Why published market share numbers disagree
| Source | What it measures | Latest month used here | ChatGPT | Gemini | Claude |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| StatCounter WW | Pageview share among tracked AI chatbots | Oct 2026 | 51.58% | 28.86% | 2.30% |
| StatCounter US | Same, U.S. only | Oct 2026 | 37.10% | 35.42% | 5.70% |
| Similarweb | Share of visits to major gen-AI websites (no apps) | Sep 2026 | 56.4% | 25.0% | 9.6% |
Claude’s share swings from about 2% (StatCounter worldwide pageviews) to about 10% (Similarweb web visits) because the panels, sites, and devices differ. Perplexity looks much larger in StatCounter than in Similarweb’s seven-assistant web set. None of these is “wrong”; they are different instruments.
Methodology and sources
What this report is
A monthly Digital Elevator research note. It republishes named, linked public figures on AI chatbot usage share and scale, with charts and a clear definition for each measurement lane.
What this report is not
- Not a proprietary panel or MAU model.
- Not a revenue market-share study.
- Not an endorsement of any vendor.
Measurement lanes
- StatCounter AI chatbot market share — pageview share among chatbots StatCounter tracks (worldwide, United States).
- Similarweb gen-AI website traffic share — visit share among a fixed set of assistant websites (global, all devices; apps and APIs excluded), via Similarweb’s public updates.
- Company-reported — MAU, WAU, or paid seats from official blogs or earnings-linked posts.
Update cadence
- We refresh this page monthly.
- Prefer the newest complete calendar month each source has published.
- If a source has not released the new month yet, we keep the prior month and say so in the article (as with Similarweb October 2026 above).
Rules for numbers
- Every percentage or count links to a named source and includes the period and geography.
- Calculations (for example month-over-month percentage-point change) are labeled as ours and show inputs.
- We never invent a blended “overall market share.”
- When a source shows a sharp series break without a documented methodology change, we call it out and avoid treating that series as continuous month-over-month evidence.
